Personal development

What is personal development vs what it is not?

Personal development is a term we have heard of, learned about and practiced. One thing to know about this is that it is a lifelong practice. Denis Waitley defines personal development as the belief that you are worth the effort, time and energy needed to develop yourself.

Another interesting quote from Jim Rohn says, “It is the endless chance to not only improve oneself but also to attract opportunities and affect others.”

As mentioned earlier, it is a lifelong thing. It never ends. So personal development may not be totally personal after all.

How do I mean? Jim Rohn says it’s not just a chance to improve, but to affect others while attracting opportunities. It’s very interesting.

Misconceptions about personal development

  • All you need is optimism

Having hope is a good thing, but it wouldn’t do you much if you didn’t put in the work. Personal development is about making you valuable. Get down to development work and keep hope alive while you’re at it.

Personal development is not torture. Sure, that would force you out of your comfort zone, but it’s not torture! The goal is to be a better person and to be valuable. It’s not going to be a smooth ride throughout, but there are some good times. It doesn’t make your life unbearable. It will stretch you out, and that’s a good thing.

  • Seminars will do the trick for you

It is you who put into practice everything you have learned in the seminars. Going to a seminar or workshop doesn’t automatically make it a walk in the park for you. You must apply everything you have learned.

  • Personal development is only for smart and ambitious people

Everyone has what it takes to grow. A newborn has what it takes to grow into an infant until it becomes an adult. It’s just a matter of time. There are no restrictions. Every human being has what it takes to get better. Give it time. Time will tell us. Also, remember that this is a lifelong process. there is no end to it, and it is not limited to a certain group of people.

  • Your mentor, coach or teacher has all the answers you need

No one has all the answers you need. Whether someone is your mentor, teacher, or coach and you learn from them doesn’t mean they have all the answers. Of course, this makes your path to development much easier than it would have been if you had to figure it all out on your own. It’s because you learn from their mistakes and the other stories they have to tell. But they don’t have all the answers. They could serve as your guide and roadmap.

Jim Rohn once said, “Be a student and not a follower because your paths are different. Maybe similar, but they are different.

What is personal development?

It involves working hard on yourself. If you have a job you do, be good at your job, but work harder on yourself than on the job.

Personal development is about making you valuable – to yourself and to others. Don’t like personal development by words alone. Take action. Jim Rohn advises people to read books, work on their language, work on their personality, work on their talents and abilities, work on their philosophy, develop their communication skills. In short, get better, get better.
